Please review a change to reduce the size of web fonts included with API documentation bundles while preserving support for character ranges used by the vast majority bundles. The following steps are taken to reduce the size of bundled web fonts from 4 MB before the change to roughly 930 kb.

  • Drop support for for WOFF format, since the newer WOFF2 format is widely supported by modern web browsers. Since WOFF2 uses improved compression, this removes more than 50% of the original file size.
  • Limit web fonts to a subset of characters commonly used in API documentation. This leaves out special characters such as dingbats, emojis, shapes, tiles and pictograms that are better covered by system fonts.

Generally, web browsers fall back to system fonts on a per-character basis, so there is no loss of functionality as long as system fonts provide good Unicode support.

This change also removes the console warnings seen in Firefox and possibly other browsers by recalculating the bounding boxes of converted web fonts.
